Abstract

The article explores the topic of grief and its differentiation from mental disorders such as Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), Major Depressive Episode, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following a loss. It presents diagnostic criteria in light of the DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 classifications, and discusses the consequences of the over-medicalization of grief. The article emphasizes the importance of symptom duration, emotional context, and the impact on daily functioning. It highlights the risks of premature pharmacological intervention and the significance of psychotherapeutic support. The text argues that while grief is a universal human experience, it may lead to serious health consequences and requires an individualized clinical approach. It also notes that grief is not limited to the death of a loved one, but may accompany other forms of loss.
